Ozaukee County Historic Mural Project

Port Washington, Wisconsin

Holy Angels School K-8, West Bend, WI

"Angels to others, Called to Serve", glass and hand-built clay tiles, 7' x 7'

The project was completed with the cooperation and creativity of all students.  It would not have been possible without the endless help of Cheryl Hofschulte (art teacher), Diane Carlson (parent/artist/volunteer) and Dawn Hartnett (artist, teacher, volunteer).  Teachers and Mr. Sterling, I appreciate your enthusiasm and flexibility throughout the entire school year.   I am thankful to each of you for this wonderful opportunity and experience.  It will always be a favorite memory of mine!

All students drew pictures of ways to serve one another.  These images resulted in the sketch below.

From September to April, over 250 hours by such a great team!  Here, it is awaiting installation.

The Process...

Hand-built Clay Tiles.  Students rolled out clay into slabs, cut and sculpted 3-dimensional shapes.  The pieces were then bisque-fired, glazed, glaze fired, and set into the mosaic.

Glass-cutting and assemblage.  Students mastered glass cutting techniques, culminating in over 10,000 pieces of glass tesserae.  Glass, found objects, tiles were adhered to the substrate.

Grouting.  The student's favorite part of the whole process, by far!  It was no surprise to me.  Students mixed up dry, sanded grout and water, with the precision of chemists.

Many hands buffed and polished excess grout off the surface of the mosaic to reveal the masterpiece.  It took just over a full school day to grout the mural and side panels.
